We are once again proud to announce & welcome the coming of new life - Selene and Lisa have both blessed the KL family with new members!Big Ups!

To Sol Arts Collective - KL founder and teaching artist Leyda "Lady Sol" Garcia and the FootworKINGz for their recent successes with the Verizon Wireless Juke commercial, October 2007 Rolling Stone magazine feature article, and most recently, Ellen DeGeneres' Really Big Show appearances. go ahead family - makin' moves!

KL History

In the summer of 1996, three young women, Jaquanda Villegas, Jacinda Bullie and Leida Garcia, came together to preserve youth and community stories while exploring the artistic and social movements of Hip-Hop. They saw Edutainment (KRS1) as a means for reaching out to their communities! Together they created programs for enhancing the artistic, cultural, spiritual, and educational development of their communities.

The Kuumba Lynx design ripened through the varied artistic, cultural, and sincere backgrounds of the three young women. Their talents included, but were not limited to, strong community ties, street dance, theatre, music, storytelling, and performance poetry. With these blessings and an undying commitment to their universal family, they devised an educational and entertaining plan to utilize the arts while empowering the youth! Making purposeful moves, the founding females incorporated the organization and became a 501(c) 3 in 1997.

KL is an Arts Partner with the Chicago Park District at Clarendon Park Community Center where KL provides free Drop In Arts programs and hosts the KL hop-hop theatre performance company, Kuumba Lynx Performance Ensemble (KLPE). The Hip Hop Arts studios have been located “on the second floor- behind the boxing ring”, since 2001.

KL has touched various Chicago communities including Bronzeville, Englewood, Rogers Park, Pilsen, Humboldt Park, & Little Village. The organization has provided services and collaborative partnerships to both local and international organizations & schools. Notably, KL has built bridges with The Mexican Fine Arts Museum, NY School for Social Research, U.I.C., MCA, Columbia College, Art Institute of Chicago, Cuba’s Alamar Arts Collective, Youth Struggling for Survival, Young Chicago Authors, Puerto Rican Cultural Center, IMAN, Juvenile Justice Youth Panels, and Alternative School Network, Teachers for Change, University of Hip Hop, Connect Force, Beacon Street Theatre, and DePaul University’s Theatre School and Steins Center.

KL is an arts-in-education, not-for--profit organization working to provide access to cross-cultural and interdisciplinary arts and community building. KL seeks to empower youth by developing programs that preserve, promote and present urban (Hip-Hop) culture, both as an artistic aesthetic and social justice movement. Programs foster creative expression in a non-judgmental space and preserve community stories while providing excellence in multi-disciplinary and performance art. KL believes in developing healthy hearts, minds, and bodies that will in turn create strong, community foundations of love.

About Kuumba Lynx Urban Performance Ensemble
Kuumba Lynx brings together diverse groups of young people to create interwoven storytelling and literary performances that empower them to understand the complexity of societal issues through working as an ensemble on the interdisciplinary production process.
Kuumba Lynx Performance Ensemble (KLPE) members research, write, and perform their original and adapted productions for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The ensemble consists of young people from vastly different racial, cultural, ethnic, religious, socio-economic, immigrant and native backgrounds. KLPE seeks to bring a variety of young people together to discover the complexity of their differences, as well as the power of their unity as it relates to social justice and the Hip-Hop Arts movement.
KLPE has been bringing groups of young people and their communities together to create performance about youth issues since 1996. The complexity of America's imperialistic politics and historical overtaking makes every individual and community story important and valuable. The stories we perform, be they painfully compassionate, bittersweet, amusing, terrifying, are presented within the context of a unified multi-race group of young people and their communities working toward a more just world.
KLPE serves as a model community, one that has been reinvented in order to fill the gaps that so many of us find ourselves falling into within our respective communities that suffer from the ills of gentrification, criminalization, various ‘isms’, & poverty. KLPE creates several touring shows per year that are presented internationally. KLPE also provides curriculum support containing State Learning Goals, in order to better equip organizers and educators for further exploration.
The all age’s interdisciplinary performance ensemble produces original Edutainment. These emerging artists combine their love of Hip-Hop and dedication to social justice with urban narratives that explore culture, spirituality, social responsibility, and cross cultural understandings...i.e. Kuumba Lynx creates EDUTAINMENT Performances are available after school hours, holidays, & on weekends.
